Dad: Why do you think they do that?
Girl: Because the companies who make these try to trick the girls into buying the pink stuff instead of stuff boys want to buy. [x]that awkward moment when a child understands the harm of forcing gender roles better than most grown male politicians.
Always reblog.
I’m surprised that I haven’t reblogged this, to be honest.
I love that last gif. She looks so frustrated. Like “Um, hello, obviously girls and boys can like anything why doesn’t anybody get that???”
This is very, very important. There are too many “girl” toys and “boy” toys and the divide needs to close. The woman who could figure out how to cure cancer one day could never do so because right now, when she’s a little girl, she’s being told that being interested in science isn’t a “girl” thing. It can get pretty bad–for example, I’ve always been really into robotics (as far as my parents know, I’m a girl) and my brother is amazing at arts and crafts and loves it. But what did we get given? I got an American Girl card-making set, and he got a do-it-yourself Smithsonian robotic spider. I’ve got a ton of girly stuff I’m not allowed to sell or give away or trade with my brother, and he can’t use my craft kits because they aren’t “manly”.
tl;dr: Fuck gender stereotypes, let kids get what they’re interested in.
